What is an Employee Net Promoter Score?

Employee net promoter score (ENPS) is a scoring system that tells you how satisfied your employees are with your company. It is calculated by asking a simple question to all the employees: Would you recommend this company to someone looking out for work?

Through this, companies know the sentiment of their employees and if the initiatives and practices support them.

How to Calculate your Employee Net Promoter Score

You share a short survey amongst your employees with the question “Will you recommend our company as a place to work amongst your friends/family?” and ask them to rate your company on a scale of 1-10. Then, each respondent can be divided into three groups based on their answers:

PromotersPassives/NeutralsDetractors
They rate your company between 9-10They rate your company between 7-8They rate your company between 0-6
Highly engaged and motivated. They are a happy and loyal lot.Not disengaged but have a few ongoing issues. Highly disengaged
Speak positively about the company NeutralSpeak negatively about the company

You can turn your passive employees into promoters easily by hearing out their concerns and resolving them.

Now, to calculate your company’s ENPS score, follow this simple formula:

ENPS Score = Percentage of Promoters – Percentage of Detractors

OR

ENPS Score = (Number of Promoters – Number of Detractors)/Total Number of Survey Respondents X 100

For instance, let’s say your company has 50 employees of which 25 are promoters, 15 are detractors, and 10 are passives.

Then, your ENPS score will be = (25-15/50) X 100 = 20

Now, let’s say you you talk to the passives and turn the 10 of them into promoters, then, your ENPS will be:

ENPS score = (35-15/50) X 100 = 40

An employee net promoter score can be of any range between -100  and 100. However, a score of 10-30 is considered good and 50 excellent for companies.

Tips to improve your Employee Net Promoter Score

Here’s how you can improve your employee satisfaction, increasing your employee net promoter score:

1. Provide flexibility

Today’s scenarios demand flexible working patterns. You need to give your employees more visibility of what is expected of them and give them the flexibility of working at their own pace, and not a 9 to 5 thing. Even if they are traveling, you should have flexible travel and expense policies that allow self-bookings and give them the freedom to change their business trip plans, when needed. This will give your employees peace of mind and they will be more productive.

2. Digitalize

Digitalization influences employee engagement in two ways:

  1. It reduces the working hours without affecting income – By digitalizing processes, it frees a lot of time for employees to do more valuable things. It increases their efficiency in everything they do, thus increasing employee engagement.
  1. It increases connectivity at work – With the introduction of many communication tools at the workplace, it helps in collaboration and interaction. Technology helps employees stay connected with each other whether they are working from a remote place or want to e-meet teams from different locations. You can also use these tools to communicate important information to all employees and make them feel valued at all times.

3. Reduce employee reimbursement time and hassle using the T&E platform

Expense reimbursement delays can be a source of resentment and frustration for employees. Implementing automated travel and expense management software such as ITILITE makes sure reimbursements are done on time so that employees feel encouraged to do timely expense report submissions and are satisfied. You can set up a process in which employees get reimbursed as soon as approval comes from the finance team. Also, with an automated system, the employees will know the real-time status of their reimbursement via notifications and alerts.

4. Take action on feedback

Once you have the ENPS score and know about the passives and detractors, try to understand their concerns and work towards resolving their issues. A good way to know about their issues can be by including a follow-up question such as “Why would you not recommend us?” in the survey. If they have pointed out some specific problem within the organization, make sure to take action on it and make sure you communicate the same to them (give them the proof that you are taking it seriously). When an employee knows that her thoughts and insights are valued, they will be more willing to share them with you in the future. This way, they will be more engaged and loyal.

Grow Your ENPS – Grow Your Business

The employee net promoter score is a powerful metric to analyze and grow employee satisfaction. The higher the score, the more enthusiastic the employees are working in your company.
